Sylvia Plath Burial Site

Graveyard at St. Thomas's

Sylvia Plath is buried in the graveyard extension at St Thomas’s church in Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge. This graveyard is located on the South West side of the church across the unmade road. The grave location is approximately 3/4 towards the end of the graveyard as you walk in at the gate. In the picture above (taken from the top of the church tower) the gate is just out of site at the bottom of the photograph.

Stoodley Pike can just be made out in the distance.

The graveyard is always open.

  2. Visited yesterday and spoke to a lovely gentleman who escorted us to the grave and spoke to us about the area. Thank you

  3. My daughter and I visited on Thursday November 3rd 2022. We were very depressed when we left. The unkempt, unloved state of this graveyard is a disgrace to the Church, and even more disrespectful to those who are unfortunate enough to lie beneath the ground. I think that this is the worst kept Graveyard I have ever visited……….I would hate to be a parishioner of the village of Heptonstall and think that this is where I am going to end my days on this Earth. Buried in the most depressing of places. Whether it is the Church or the Local Authority who are supposed to keep this place sacred neither are doing a very good job. It is awful.
