Steam comes to Blackshawhead Fete

2016 fete posterThis year’s Blackshaw Head Village Fete on Saturday 3rd September boasts a great new attraction! Brighouse and Halifax Model Engineers will be offering rides on one of their steam-powered railway trains, on a length of track specially installed for the occasion.

The Fete starts at 1.30pm and the steam train is just one part of an afternoon extravaganza which includes live music from the Peace Artistes; a variety of stalls and sideshows, two different dog shows, and the legendary Produce Competition. For the children there’s Punch and Judy and magic shows, bouncy slide, face painting and kids’ sports, whilst the adults can enjoy the beer tent, food stalls and and barbecue.

Lunches and afternoon teas will, as usual, be available in “Pats’ Pantry” in the next-door Blackshaw Head Chapel, and in addition the chapel hosts the local history group SHED’s exhibition and the schools’ art competition.

The Fete is also the start and finish point for the Blackshaw Head Fell Race, starting at 2pm, (category BS : distance 8.9km, climb 274m; entry on the day; full details at www.blackshawheadfellrace.co.uk/).

FETE STEAM 2Admission to the fete is by donation at the gate. The 596 bus leaves Hebden Bridge at a quarter past the hour and stops outside the fete field, returning each hour just after half past.   Full fete details are available on-line at the website www.blackshaw.net/village-fete/. This contains the fete programme and entry forms for the children’s and adults’ produce competitions and the dog show. These can also be picked up from Hebden Bridge TIC, Heptonstall Post Office, Great Rock Coop, and May’s farm shop at Colden, which also has spare entry forms.

Up to date information can be found on Blackshaw Head Fete’s social media pages.

Anyone wanting to get involved will be given space in the bowling club, or the chance to ‘buddy up’ with some-one along the trail.

Please contact Jan Lymer on 01422 847979 or 07772 168812 so we can match you  up with someone local.

Anyone can come along and raise money for their own cause, or just get the chance to de-clutter the house!!

Do you want a life-saving defibrillator in the Village?

The Parish Council is proposing to install a defibrillator on the outside of the Post Office in Heptonstall. It could save the life of someone – child or adult – suffering a cardiac arrest. No medical or special training is needed to use it.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service says:

“Think – If a Cardiac Arrest happened where you are now – where would the nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED) be? If the answer is realistically more than 5 minutes away then you should start an AED or Community Responder programme. AEDs save lives…“

The Resuscitation Council UK says:

“The Resuscitation Council (UK) strongly recommends the implementation of early defibrillation. Increased provision of early defibrillation through the widespread deployment of AEDs is now considered a realistic strategy for reducing mortality from cardiac arrest due to ischaemic heart disease.”

Mr Mike Mongon has very kindly donated a suitable defibrillator, the Parish Council will purchase a weather-proof cabinet for it and the package will be supported by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS). No special training is needed to operate the device but an e-learning familiarisation course will be available on-line and, if preferred, it may be possible to arrange a ‘live’ course with YAS.

Before going ahead we wish to confirm that the project has Community backing, so please tell us:

  • Are you in favour of installing a defibrillator as proposed?
  • Would you like to attend a YAS familiarisation course if possible?

ADMIN Defib survey flyer June2016 (1) 300The period of consultation will be from 13 June to 27 June.

Questionnaires will be delivered to households as well as being available for pick up at Heptonstall Post Office, and can be downloaded here.

Once completed they should be dropped in the box inside the Post Office.

Do please let us know what you think.

Thank you for your help.

Meeting about changes to Chapel

The Parish Council planning meeting tonight (Wednesday 15 June) will begin as planned outside Stone Slack, near Drapers Corner, at 7.30pm but will move to Green Slack house, just behind Drapers Corner, if a longer discussion is needed.

The first item on the agenda is plans for two houses to be built on the empty land near Stone Slack. The meeting will continue with discussion about changes to the Heptonstall Methodist Chapel as detailed below. Members of the public may attend.

Disposal of Sunday School and changes to Methodist Chapel

Comments are invited on plans for a new kitchen, toilets and meeting room in Heptonstall Methodist Chapel as part of plans to dispose of the Sunday School, and create modern facilities in the chapel.

The public consultation is being organised through the central Methodist Church. Listed building consent has been applied for to the central Methodist Church because they deal with applications through the Ecclesiastical Exemptions Act, instead of Calderdale Council.

Members of the public can comment by emailing conservation@methodistchurch.org.uk

The kitchen and toilets would be in the vestry and storage rooms at the back of the church. Pews would be removed on either side of the pulpit to create a servery area and exhibition space on either side of the pulpit. Pews between the two entrance doors would be removed to make space to build a meeting room. Repairs to the roof are also planned.

The parish council has been invited to comment, and will be discussing the plans as part of a planning meeting outside Stone Slack at 7.30pm on Wednesday, June 15. The public are invited to attend.

English Heritage, the Victorian Society, the Ancient Monuments Society and others have also been invited to comment.

Heptonstall Social and Bowling Club

Heptonstall Social and Bowling Club has been running since the late 1960s, welcoming all members to benefit from our club. We offer bowling, snooker and pool to all members wishing to join, and have many of our own bowling and snooker teams.

The club is open on various nights, depending on the season and what social events are being hosted.

As a club, we can offer private functions such as wedding receptions, birthdays and funerals at reasonable prices. We have kitchen and bar facilities that can be used for your own individual requirements, and a stage big enough for live acts, bands and DJs.

The club is used for regular events throughout the year, which are suitable for all ages, including: playgroups, sequence dancing, exercise classes, and worship. Each year we hold our own events, such as: Burns’ Supper, the local pantomime in November, Heptonstall’s Got Talent, New Year Eve free party, our famous Bonfire Night, and the Heptonstall Village Team Xmas Lunch for our older residents. There are other events in between, according to the time of year.

The club has a new website site, which can be accessed via this link.

Pace Egg

The Juggler capers in, dodging rain from the West

St George has a brolly and a star on his breast

Bold Slasher likes rain, he’ll not hide with the rest

The Doctor has a topper, he knows what is best

The Black Prince of Paradise, his robe’s put to the test

The Egyptian King’s slaves keep him dry. Not a jest!

Hector The Champion is snug ‘neath his crest

But what of poor Tosspot, his coat’s not the best

Ah he’s safe from the floods, he’s found an old life vest!

If you, like the others, want to be well impressed

Good Friday! The Pace Egg! Make Heptonstall your dest…..(ination)!

With thanks to Andy Carter for the words and Frank Sutcliffe for the original photograph. This year we will be collecting for the: Community Foundation for Calderdale Flood Relief Fund and East African Playgrounds project to build safe play areas for village children in East Africa.

Please come by foot or public transport. Parking in the village is very limited.

Towngate Closed

Towngate is due to be closed to traffic between Hepton Drive and Valley View Road from 5th to 11th April whilst Yorkshire Water/Morrison Utility Services replace a water hydrant opposite No. 19. During the closure the official diversion for traffic in and out of the Village will be via Lee Wood Road/Draper Corner/Smithwell Lane but local traffic is likely to divert via Hepton Drive, Longfield and Valley View Road. During the period of closure there is thus likely to be heavier traffic than usual on the Hepton Drive/Longfield/Valley View Road circuit. Thanks to John Scarborough for the information.
