Does the Civic Parish of Heptonstall need its community group?

hep_fwd_logoOver the last 10 or so years Heptonstall Forward has been active on behalf of all Residents, putting forward and supporting their views when it has really mattered.

Whether it be planning issues or concerns over speed limits, establishing a newsletter or bulb planting, Heptonstall Forward has taken the Residents’ views forward and represented them at meetings, arranging emergency meetings if a situation demands this.

In May 2016 the members of Heptonstall Forward will be retiring, as their brief to produce and oversee the Community-led Parish Plan will be ending, this role    being handed over to the Parish Council.

So is the community group now to fold?

OR should it continue representing the Residents, but with a fresh brief?

Does the Civic Parish of Heptonstall need a community group?

The Bowling Club elements of Festival Day

Please be aware that any donation made at the bowling club on festival day will go to the Village Team.

If you wish to donate to the Heptobstall Festival to help us carry on bringing you top class entertainment in future years, please donate in buckets in Weaver’s Square, the Church Ruin, the pubs or at the Dog Show. We really appreciate your support!
Three throws for oneThe Heptonstall Villlage Teams’s first fundraiser is to invite you all to re-visit the election and buy 3 water bombs for a pound, Emma Hartley and the Calder High Students are manning this stand for the princely sum of now’t.

The stand was made for us for free, and signage company: ‘School Image’ provided all the graphics and promotional boards for us FOC. So all funds received will help to cover todays FREE activities

 

Flo BellamyFlo Bellamy photo booth is our second fundraiser. For £1.00 per person you can whizz into her booth, grab a prop and get a 30 second fast fire round of shots, before whizzing out the other side. Flo is working for now’t for us, but she will be offering to enhance your shots and get them printed on acrylic blocs, canvas etc. Your shots will be available to download for FREE after the event.

 

Festival Poster

Our third fundraiser is the pop up café in the bowling club. Here you can fill your platter from our ALL YOU CAN EAT Tapas Buffet or buy a children’s sandwich platter before settling down to watch the kids playing on the children’s stalls in the bowing club.

 

We will also be selling afternoon tea and cake, served in old fashioned miss- matched cups, saucers cups and saucers.

Once again Emma Hartley has arranged for some Calder High School Students to help us out, and all profits from this café will go directly to The Heptonstall Village Team, and the costs of putting the day on.

Children’s Parade on Festival Day

Drum machine and The Heptonstall Pantomime Group lead the way! 

With the generous financial support from The Heptonstall Junior and Infant School and the Friends and Parents of Heptonstall we funds to spend on materials for the Children’s Parade on Festival Day.

We will be meeting at 10.30 am in Weavers Square and parading from 11 am headed up by the Heptonstall Pantomime Group and Drum Machine.

Jacky Kelly, from the Heptonstall Village Team will be knocking on doors along the route and seeing if some of our older generations would like a ring side seat as the parade passes through.

The Heptonstall Out of School Club have also lent their support to the event, by making a large Giant Peach to carry aloft on the day.

As a final touch, some of the kids will be carrying platters of peaches to offer to our special ‘roadside guests’ as the parade passes by.

The whole of the festival is aimed squarely at families, with plenty for all ages to see and do across the village including the Roald Dahl treasure hunt and not-to-be-missed Frolicked Puppet Theatre in Weaver Square at 1pm.

The programme which will run at the Bowling Club is an area to take the kids for a sit down and value ALL YOU CAN EAT Tapas, or sandwich platter lunch, or a quicker cake and sarnie. There will be lots of free activities where the youngest and oldest amongst us can join in, and everyone else too!

There’ll be plenty of food available across the village too – with a giant hog roast int the ruins, Vegan Food, snacks available from both pubs and delicious tea in the church – you should find something to your taste.

A fun day to be had for all across the whole village!

Pennine Heritage – Local Trails

The South Pennines are a combination of unique landscape and outstanding industrial heritage. The area has long been a favoured resort for walkers and historians.

To share this special area with even more people, Pennine Horizons has teamed up with a whole host of local volunteers, community groups and organisations to create 12 interesting and inspiring walks and trails. Pennine Horizons Trails provide you with an opportunity to explore the area on foot with the bonus of having information about the landscape, ecology or history at your finger tips.

The e-trail Apps (with map, walk directions, audio commentaries and historical photographs) can be downloaded to a phone or tablet and include interesting stories of local events and people of note as well as  information about  the awe-inspiring ecology and outstanding industrial heritage of  the area. The trails are:

  • Power In the Landscape – App available.   A wander down the beautiful Colden Valley uncovering early 19th century water powered industry. 6 miles
  • Charlestown and Jumble Hole – App available. This delightful walk along the canal and up a beautiful wooded valley will give you glimpses of hidden 18th  and 19th century industry. 3 miles.
  • Cragg Vale – Coming Soon. This linear walk takes you down a wooded stream where you can see remnants of the area’s rich industrial heritage. 5 miles.
  • Sam Hill of Soyland – Wool Trade, Scandal and Feuds. Coming Soon. Follow in the footsteps of Sam, a great wool baron, who lived in the beautiful Ryburn Valley 300 years ago. 3.5 miles
  • Hebden Bridge’s Woodland Heritage. Coming Soon. A walk around Hebden Bridge town and surrounding woodland to meet some of our native British trees (plus a few of their close relatives from abroad) and find out about their local and traditional uses. 3 miles.
  • Blackshawhead Packhorse Trail. Coming Soon. Explore the Packhorse Trail from Blackshawhead to Heptonstall; learn about this ancient route with far reaching views. 2 miles.
  • The Heptonstall Trail – an Ancient Village Explored. Coming Soon. This gentle circular walk takes you around the ancient Pennine hilltop settlement of Heptonstall, discovering its rich history and conserved stone buildings. 1.5 miles
  • A Walk Around Todmorden with the Fieldens. Coming Soon. Explore the wonderful town of Todmorden, discovering the role of the Fieldens and some of the town landmarks, 3.5 miles.
  • Todmorden Tops – Forged by the Fielden Dynasty. Coming Soon. This circular walk takes you over the hilltops to the north & west of Todmorden to enjoy a landscape forged by nature & the Fielden Dynasty. 8 miles.
  • Riots and Protests – Radical History around Todmorden. Coming Soon. The first of two walks which introduce sites associated with the early radical social movements (Chartism and the Anti-Poor Law Movement ) of the Upper Calder Valley while enjoying its unique topography and scenery. 8 miles
  • Cooperatives and Visions – Radical History around Hebden Bridge. Coming Soon. The second of two walks which introduce sites associated with the early radical social movements of the Upper Calder Valley (cooperative, trade union and women’s struggles) while enjoying its unique topography and scenery. 8 miles

The Future of the Heptonstall Christmas Tree.

For the past 3 years Heptonstall Lights and Planting Group (HeLP) and other volunteers have provided the village with a Christmas tree.  A resident in Weavers Square has very generously let us use his electricity for the tree lights free of charge.

Understandably this arrangement is not sustainable indefinitely and so HeLP has applied for planning permission to have a power cable installed in Weavers Square to provide electricity for the tree lights and for other existing events.  We do not wish this to lead to a mushrooming in the number of events held in the square. HeLP, who will hold the key to the supply, will only grant any additional access to it after proper consultation with residents in the vicinity.

HeLP have received a Community Grant from Calderdale to cover the cost of running a cable from the centre of the road under the wall into Weavers Square by the litter bin.  Northern Powergrid tell us the work will be completed in half a day to minimise disruption.  The power supply will be housed in a small stone box which will be attached to the inside of the wall adjacent to the sign to the toilets, protruding above the wall at about the same height.  The box will be 2 ft x 2 ft x 1 ft 4 ins with a lockable door.

This can only go ahead with the approval of Calderdale Council.  As part of their consultation process they will inform the Parish Council of our application.

Grant Applications to Parish Council

If your organisation wishes to be considered for a Grant from the Parish Council you need to be aware of the Protocol below :

PROTOCOL FOR GRANTS (GENERAL)

1. Grants should be applied for in writing under the criteria laid down by the Parish Council (PC) which has sole discretion in respect of making an award.

2. All Grant claims should be received by the PC by 30 November in respect of payments to be made in the following financial year (commencing 1 April), and should be accompanied by a copy of the claimant’s Constitution, Committee structure (if any) and bank account details together with a copy of the latest audited accounts.

3. All Grants of £250 or less will be paid in a lump sum after the first PC meeting of the financial year. There will be no requirement for the organisation to account to the PC for the way it has spent the Grant.

4. No organisation will be given more than one Grant of £250 or less in any financial year.

5. For Grants over £250 it will be necessary for the organisation to discuss the application with PC members at a meeting to be held in either November or December each year which should include an agreement with the PC as to how it wishes the Grant to be paid. This will normally be by means of staged payments.
The PC will require evidence of the expenditure for each claim except where such payments are contributing to the day to day administration of the organisation, and shall require the completion of a ‘feedback’ form.

6. If the Grant is given for a specific project the PC will require evidence of the fulfilment of the project.

Heptonstall Fell Race – Sunday 22 March 2015 – Marshals and Helpers Needed…

“Many thanks for the generous support  given to the annual Heptonstall Fell Races each March and July.

2015 year will see the races take place for their 5th running, during which time we will have all worked together to raise around £10,000 for local causes (St Thomas’s Church, Calder Valley Search and Rescue, local Scouts, Heptonstall Festival)

Each race has been a tremendous success as runners from all over the UK have flocked to the village to enjoy a day out on the local hills combined with the hospitality of the village. The races have become known for their community spirit, and the unique atmosphere and spectacle created by the village.

SUNDAY MARCH 22nd 2015 – CAN YOU HELP?

The race can only take place with the enthusiastic involvement of our neighbours, friends, and family. This generous support is much appreciated and has proven to be a key factor in runners returning to the event year after year.

The 2015 race will take place on SUNDAY MARCH 22nd 2015 – we would be extremely grateful if you could spare a few hours of your time to help us marshal the event 

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

No experience is required. A marshal is simply there to keep an eye on the race at a given point, advising runners of any hazards, and reporting back to the race organiser to confirm all is going well. Marshals additionally make sure runners don’t  head off in the wrong direction, or alerting runners to approach road crossings safely. Your position can be organised to suit your preference and available time, either in the village and surrounding fields, or for the more adventurous, somewhere on the hills around Hardcastle Craggs.

We usually team you up with a friend or neighbour, providing you with instructions, timings, viz bib, and contact numbers. No experience is required but we will explain everything you will need know for your position. The runners will be pleased to see you and will be thanking you as they run by – hopefully you can cheer them on. It’s a great excuse for an early Spring day out followed up with a beer and food in the pub afterwards.
