With the generous financial support from The Heptonstall Junior and Infant School and the Friends and Parents of Heptonstall we had £200 sponsorship to spend on materials for the children’s parade on Festival Day.
The first load of teddies are washed and drying ready for the Teddy Tombola in the Bowling Club on Festival day! Come along with your ‘Wonka Winks’ and have a go at winning one!!! Beth Hardman is selling £4 bags of Wonka Winks in the Heptonstall school playground in advance of the festival for the bargain price of £2.50. The Winks can be spent in the bowling club on Festival Day, to take away the problem of giving children money.
Please be aware that any donation made at the bowling club on festival day will go to the Village Team.
If you wish to donate to the Heptobstall Festival to help us carry on bringing you top class entertainment in future years, please donate in buckets in Weaver’s Square, the Church Ruin, the pubs or at the Dog Show. We really appreciate your support!
The Heptonstall Villlage Teams’s first fundraiser is to invite you all to re-visit the election and buy 3 water bombs for a pound, Emma Hartley and the Calder High Students are manning this stand for the princely sum of now’t.
The stand was made for us for free, and signage company: ‘School Image’ provided all the graphics and promotional boards for us FOC. So all funds received will help to cover todays FREE activities
Flo Bellamy photo booth is our second fundraiser. For £1.00 per person you can whizz into her booth, grab a prop and get a 30 second fast fire round of shots, before whizzing out the other side. Flo is working for now’t for us, but she will be offering to enhance your shots and get them printed on acrylic blocs, canvas etc. Your shots will be available to download for FREE after the event.
Our third fundraiser is the pop up café in the bowling club. Here you can fill your platter from our ALL YOU CAN EAT Tapas Buffet or buy a children’s sandwich platter before settling down to watch the kids playing on the children’s stalls in the bowing club.
We will also be selling afternoon tea and cake, served in old fashioned miss- matched cups, saucers cups and saucers.
Once again Emma Hartley has arranged for some Calder High School Students to help us out, and all profits from this café will go directly to The Heptonstall Village Team, and the costs of putting the day on.

We will be meeting at 10.30 am in Weavers Square and parading from 11 am headed up by the Heptonstall Pantomime Group and Drum Machine.
Jacky Kelly, from the Heptonstall Village Team will be knocking on doors along the route and seeing if some of our older generations would like a ring side seat as the parade passes through.
The Heptonstall Out of School Club have also lent their support to the event, by making a large Giant Peach to carry aloft on the day.
As a final touch, some of the kids will be carrying platters of peaches to offer to our special ‘roadside guests’ as the parade passes by.
The whole of the festival is aimed squarely at families, with plenty for all ages to see and do across the village including the Roald Dahl treasure hunt and not-to-be-missed Frolicked Puppet Theatre in Weaver Square at 1pm.
The programme which will run at the Bowling Club is an area to take the kids for a sit down and value ALL YOU CAN EAT Tapas, or sandwich platter lunch, or a quicker cake and sarnie. There will be lots of free activities where the youngest and oldest amongst us can join in, and everyone else too!
There’ll be plenty of food available across the village too – with a giant hog roast int the ruins, Vegan Food, snacks available from both pubs and delicious tea in the church – you should find something to your taste.
A fun day to be had for all across the whole village!

We will be hosting our second Heptonstall Village Burns Supper Night, and this year, we have a lone piper, our stars from the village pantomime as well as, Francis Durning doing the formal address to the Haggis as well as live music from 3 men and a box.
Christmas Lunch at the Social & Bowling Club: Thursday 18 December 2014
Thank you! Thanks to all for the generous support for our second Christmas Lunch! We had 65 guests, served by Village Team elves, and we sent over 15 meals to local houses.
The meal was cooked for us at no charge by Rik Jones, Head Chef at Devonshire Hall, University of Leeds, assisted by his partner Sarah Wilmot. The food was kindly supplied by Hebden and Poole veg suppliers and Sykes House Farm butchers, both based in Wetherby.
The wonderful Heptonstall School Choir entertained the guests with beautifully sung Christmas carols as well as more up to date songs.
The Village Team is planning to have up to six trips this year. We’ve been lucky enough to secure a large luxury coach which “kneels” to the kerb for easy access.
Our Spring Coach Trip is on Tuesday 14 April 2015 to Stephen H Smith’s Garden Centre at Otley, leaving Heptonstall at 11.30 am.

The garden centre has a 300 seat restaurant, indoor and outdoor plant sales area, and an Edinburgh Wool Shop.
It’s all on one level, so fully accessible.

We have 39 people already booked for this year’s community event, which will take place at The Social and Bowling Club on 18 December.
This is intended as a warm and welcoming Christmas event for anyone, and we will not discriminate against those who consider themselves too young to come along and join in!!
The big goal this year is to raise as much funding as we can to cover the cost of the day, and buy a really nice gift for all our guests.
Last year we sent home around 15 lunches for those who could not attend, and we know they were very much appreciated. This year we would like to do the same.
Our guests tell us, that they wish to get to know more of the newer inhabitants of Heptonstall and therefore they warmly invite you to join in, and come and have a Christmas lunch with us.

Can’t believe how quickly this year has gone! We are proposing a 3-course meal and surprise gift, for £10. A lot of our guests do not want a ‘free lunch’, but would rather pay a fair price for a good deal. We want to build in entertainment for this year too, but until we have organized that, we will be keeping mum!

Guests at the Heptonstall Village Team lunch were surprised and a little taken aback when they were served by witches, skeletons, Draculas and other spooky creatures.
There were over 20 guests at this fun event. Anyone is welcome to come and join in the fun….. You won’t be discriminated against…. even if you think you are under age! Honest!
These events are lively, intelligent fun and aim to get the generations to mix up a bit. We often get old friends up from Mytholm Court and Mytholm Meadows as well as Elphin Court.

It is all too easy to get caught up in a fast paced hi tech life.
What a wonderful, easy going funny evening at the Heptonstall Sports and Social Club recently.
Laminated board, square cardboard horses, and a pack of extra large playing Race Night cards was all it took to get people of their seats and shouting for their particular nag to win!
The evening was only a fiver and included a pie and pea supper.
Funds were raised for much needed running repairs, and to convert one of the toilets for wheelchair access in time for the Heptonstall Village Team Christmas Lunch.
As a trainee chef, Iain worked under Raymond Blanc, who helped him hone his passion for blending taste, texture and flavours.
Once qualified Iain went on to work alongside Gordon Ramsey, who further helped him in developing his passion for food (along with a few lessons in advanced use of colourful language!).
It was with great pride when he agreed to come to the Heptonstall Sports and Social Club and belt out a stunning 5 course meal for 50 delighted guests.
Funds raised were to go towards dog charities, with Ian’s Charity receiving £160.00. PAWS received £250.00 and the Bowling Club took receipt of £400, which will be used towards converting one of the toilets for wheelchair users.
Iain and his beautiful Fiancé Sinead, have fallen in love with the people and the place, will be coming back for their honeymoon next April, and have promised to put on a big bash for us once a year from here on in!
A big big thank you, to all the wonderful volunteers who made the night go so well.

The Village Team -Lunch at The Cross – Wednesday 27 August 2014
Our fourth Lunch Club event went very well last week, one resident said it was a fantastic opportunity to meet up with friends she had not seen in a while, whilst another commented on the fabulous Steak and Ale pie and chips for £4.00. Bargain!
Terry asked us to remind the village that this deal is available to ALL (young and old alike) from 12.00 til 3pm. Every Wednesday.
Next date Wed 24th September. Come along and join in, the food is good and the atmosphere is warm and inviting.
Don’t forget! …..It is only 2 weeks until our poetry morning. This will be more than just poems from ww1, with 3 local published poets on hand to read from there works as well.

Cake and Conversation with the Shaggy Dog Storytellers – Sunday 10 August 2014
There were over 70 people present on the day… it was pouring with rain outside… but warm and welcoming in the Bowling Club as guests were entertained with songs and music from the Shaggy Dog Storytellers. Nora 92…. stole the show with her wonderful voice and even more outrageous sense of humour.
Young and old (Paige 6 months, Phyliss Walstow 100 and 2 weeks!) enjoyed the cake and sandwiches prepared by The Heptonstall Village Team, and we all laughed at the wonderful tales told by the Shaggy Dog Storytellers.

To further promote the forthcoming Cake and Conversation Event on 10 August, Jan Lymer of the Village Team has the following message…

Most of you know me well enough by now to realise my heart is in the right place when it comes to things to do with our village.!
I really enjoyed helping to raise money for the Festival, and having considered that I have completed that task to my satisfaction, have turned my ever enthusiastic spirit to setting up something for the older community of Heptonstall.
The Parish Council, has been wonderful in granting us some cash to help us get up and off the ground, and the events we have arranged so far have been much appreciated by those who attended.
In particular, those residents in Elphin Court, Mytholm Meadows and Mytholm court, who were moved down to Hebden when the old folks home in Heptonstall was closed down are really enjoying whizzing back up to The Cross and The Bowling Club, and meeting up with old friends and making some new ones.
What they would really like to do too, is to mix with the younger generations, and share stories from when they used to live up here. Hence this Sundays Cake And Conversation event 1.30, at the bowling club.
Phyliss Walstow, (100) pictured left, will be sitting by the door, ready to great you when you come (anyone fancying surprising her with a birthday card, would be most welcome!)
If you can’t attend, but would like to support us, we would be grateful for raffle prizes.

The village celebrated the Tour de France weekend in Grand style, attracting visiting cyclists and runners from across the UK to the annual summer Fell Race. This year’s race, renamed the Heptonstall Grand Depart Fell Race, was a huge hit with cycling fans arriving in the area for the Tour de France the following day. Runners from London, Edinburgh, and the Midlands were among those taking advantage of the temporary Tour de France campsite at the bowling club, as 30 tents and camper vans pitched on the fields adjacent to the club. On a perfect summer’s evening, it was hard to imagine a better venue for pre-Tour de France celebrations; Heptonstall’s historic cobbled streets were decked out in bunting, hanging baskets, and of course, yellow bikes, whilst excited runners gathered in their colourful club vests on the Weaver’s Square Start-Line.
Organiser Stephen Grimley said: “The Heptonstall Hurriers and the village volunteers are getting quite a reputation for putting on races, our 100 visitors were full of praise for the beautiful village, its landscape, and well organised races, but above all, the community spirit, and warm welcome of the people of Heptonstall. The event was another big success. We raised around £400 for Heptonstall Festival and were delighted that so many of our friends, neighbours, and families got into Le Tour spirit, volunteering their support so generously. We could not have achieved any of this without their help”
“The organisers and runners would like to say a big thank you to the 30 marshals (mostly from the village), we hope they enjoyed their free pints! A massive thanks to Terry at The White Lion for hosting the race and generously providing all the prizes, we are also grateful to Anthony Holt for letting us use his field for parking/ race route. Hazel Noble and Penny and Mark Wharton also kindly allowed the race to pass through their fields. Mark Wigg and Mark Holman gave up a huge amount of their time helping us to set up and organise the race. Steve Hoyle form Blackshaw Head Fete provided the tents, whilst Alpine Outdoors of Hebden Bridge supplied race numbers”
The wonderful post-race party was laid on by Jan, Guy, and the Village Team. The team set up French themed catering in the bunting-decorated court yard behind The Cross. Hundreds of locals and race goers gathered after the race to enjoy Tartiflette and wine under the bunting, whilst prizes were awarded to the race winners. Else Evans stole the show; she created a magnificent Tour de France chocolate cake which quickly disappeared, devoured by hordes of hungry runners.

In the race itself Calder Valley Fell Runners pair Karl Gray (England International) and Heptonstall’s own Holly Page (who also runs for England) demolished the men’s and women’s course records. Gray, tackling the race for the first time, sped round in 49 mins 37 seconds, smashing Christopher Smale previous best of 52:09 set in 2012. Joe Washington made it a 1-2 for Calder Valley with Richard Meade, an elite marathon runner who was part of a contingent of runners from Edinburgh in the area for the bike race, third. All three beat the previous record of Smale, who was 12th this time. Heptonstall based Holly Page came ninth of the 94 runners and won the women’s race for the third year in a row. Her time of 54:58 bettered the 55:42 of Holmfirth international runner Katie Walshaw in 2011.
International Mountain Runner Karl Gray, who is used to scaling The Three Peaks with the minim of fuss, remarked how tough the course had been. The 6 mile route, which has more than 1,600 feet of ascent, starts by heading up the cobbles, then plunges down to the Blue Pig before finding its way up 1000 feet of ascent to High Brown Knoll, the highest point on moors above Pecket Well. The race then returns in similar fashion, including a gruelling climb back through the woods from the Blue Pig.
That test wasn’t enough for Sikobe Litaba who ran approximately 30 miles from Glossop before taking part the race and beating 12 other runners back to the pub.
The next Heptonstall Fell Race will be the long, 15 mile race, which takes place in March 2015. We look forward to seeing another spectacular day for the village.

Coach Trip to Knaresborough: Wednesday 17th September
The trip is on a Knaresborough market day, leaving Heptonstall at 10:30am, & picking up at, or near, Mytholm Court at approx. 10:40. En route, we will stop for a comfort break, arriving in Knaresborough around 1pm. After a leisurely look around the shops etc, we will stop at a fish and chip restaurant for tea on our way back, and arrive back in Heptonstall by 6:30 – 7:00. Poetry Reading with Eileen Barnes – Sunday 7th September – 1pm onwards at The Bowling Club

Another amazing Heptonstall Village family day; three local poets will be reading a selection of First World War poetry as well as work from their own publications.
Award winning Sarah Corbett, who has been shortlisted for the T.S.Eliot and Forward prizes, will be joined by Simon Rennie and Michael Crowley, as well as poetry from the floor by many current and former residents of the parish area.
£5.00 entrance including a sandwich, cake and refreshments.
This social event, open to all, is being organised by Eileen Barnes, 85, who lived in Heptonstall Parish for most of her life, and now resides in Mytholm Court.

All Proceeds to go to funds for the Heptonstall Village Team, a new and formally established group which aims to organise a variety of events throughout the year for the older residents of Heptonstall Parish.
They aim to provide opportunities for Heptonstall Parish residents to socialise and maximise that opportunity by providing transport, to and from, the venues where possible; to support residents who are unable to attend by supplying gifts, cakes and buns direct to homes after the event; and to encourage the involvement of all age ranges within the Heptonstall Parish Area by recruiting volunteers to help and assist in the running of events.
