Grant for new Friends group

The new Friends of Heptonstall Chapel and Sunday School has received a grant of £3,000 towards a feasibility study of conversion of the Sunday School from Calderdale Council, plus a further £1,000 from Heptonstall Parish Council.

Although this is not sufficient for a full feasibility study, it is a very good starting point towards the kind of level of detail that would be required for a large Heritage Lottery Grant application. A full study would cost about £6,000, and the group is looking at additional sources of funding.

The Friends group will be spending part of this money on financial projections for a holiday let on the lower floor and public hall upstairs in the Sunday School, and on architect’s sketches for creating this with disabled access to both floors. When these are available they will be made public for comment.

The Friends group is also looking at ways of forging stronger links between the Chapel and community. To this end, with the Church Council’s support, three local textile artists will display their work as part of the Hebden Bridge Open Studios event in July.If the Chapel renovations are not completed by then, they will use the Sunday School.

The group is also hoping to organise a Gala production of an unusual version of Handel’s Messiah to be performed in the Chapel in Spring 2018.  This will incorporate Easter sections of the piece not often performed and use young local soloists for a brighter sound than the traditional Christmas version.

Network Rail – Calder Valley Route Upgrade – forthcoming work and information sessions

As part of the rail investment in the North, Network Rail are investing over £1 billion on targeted upgrades to the rail network, helping to support and grow the regional economy.

The Calder Valley Route Upgrade is part of this investment programme. The route upgrade will deliver faster services and improve connections between key towns and cities across the North.

As part of the upgrade plan, we will be carrying out track and signal upgrades along the Calder Valley route, this will pave the way for faster journeys.

We have already completed the upgrade to signals and track between Manchester Victoria and Littleborough. We are currently working on upgrades between Littleborough and Bradford Interchange.

From 19 March until 15 May 2017 (excluding Easter and Tour de Yorkshire weekends), we will be working weekends to renew and lower track in locations along the route. We’re working closely with train operators to communicate changes to services with passengers and advising passengers to check before you travel at www.nationalrail.co.uk

We understand that our work will also impact on communities (especially people who live and work nearby the railway); we will notify in advance of working, explain what work is planned and when we expect our work to be noisy.

We’re working with businesses, local authorities, media and politicians to make sure the general public know what is happening and when.

We are holding a series of community information sessions about the Calder Valley Route Upgrade; we would like to invite you to attend. Representatives from Network Rail and our contractors will be on hand to answer any questions about this planned work.

Car Park Proposal Cancelled

The following has been received from John Scarborough of Heptonstall Parish Council:

Following the Consultation Exercise carried out in November 2016 the Parish Council has decided not to proceed further with a possible new car park on Valley View Road due to lack of community support.

All households in the Parish of Heptonstall received details of the proposed scheme together with a questionnaire designed to establish the level of support for it. Some 42% of you returned the questionnaires (47% in the Village) but fewer than 50% were in favour of proceeding (46% in the Village and 43% in the Parish as a whole).

Although  74% of you thought that Heptonstall Village needed additional off-street parking and 57% of you thought that the proposed lay-by would make a worthwhile addition, only 43% and 45%  of you respectively thought the proposed scheme would deliver Value for Money and were willing to pay extra Council Tax to finance it.

You the Community “have had your say” and have come out clearly against proceeding with the scheme, the Parish Council and Traffic Group have accordingly closed down the Project. We will however continue to maintain what pressure we can on Calderdale Council to maintain and improve car parking facilities in the Village and the rest of the Parish.

Heptonstall Defibrillator Update

The external cabinet for the defibrillator on the wall outside Heptonstall Post Office has now been installed. Very shortly the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS) will come and check all is OK.

A digital code will be set by YAS and will be given to anyone calling 999 in an emergency situation. This code will be used to open the cabinet housing the defibrillator itself which ‘talks you through’ the process of its use. Essential information is shown on the red strip on the outside of the cabinet.

Do you want a life-saving defibrillator in the Village?

The Parish Council is proposing to install a defibrillator on the outside of the Post Office in Heptonstall. It could save the life of someone – child or adult – suffering a cardiac arrest. No medical or special training is needed to use it.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service says:

“Think – If a Cardiac Arrest happened where you are now – where would the nearest Automated External Defibrillator (AED) be? If the answer is realistically more than 5 minutes away then you should start an AED or Community Responder programme. AEDs save lives…“

The Resuscitation Council UK says:

“The Resuscitation Council (UK) strongly recommends the implementation of early defibrillation. Increased provision of early defibrillation through the widespread deployment of AEDs is now considered a realistic strategy for reducing mortality from cardiac arrest due to ischaemic heart disease.”

Mr Mike Mongon has very kindly donated a suitable defibrillator, the Parish Council will purchase a weather-proof cabinet for it and the package will be supported by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service (YAS). No special training is needed to operate the device but an e-learning familiarisation course will be available on-line and, if preferred, it may be possible to arrange a ‘live’ course with YAS.

Before going ahead we wish to confirm that the project has Community backing, so please tell us:

  • Are you in favour of installing a defibrillator as proposed?
  • Would you like to attend a YAS familiarisation course if possible?

ADMIN Defib survey flyer June2016 (1) 300The period of consultation will be from 13 June to 27 June.

Questionnaires will be delivered to households as well as being available for pick up at Heptonstall Post Office, and can be downloaded here.

Once completed they should be dropped in the box inside the Post Office.

Do please let us know what you think.

Thank you for your help.
